This position is located at the Polytechnic campus, 6110 South
Sagewood, Mesa, AZ.
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D)
upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of
employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving
record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month
period from date of hire.
Must pass pre-employment audiogram exam post offer of
employment.
Job Description:
Facilities Management, Polytechnic campus, seeks a Groundskeeper
Specialist (Tree Worker) to maintain trees and woody plants to
ensure they are healthy, safe and in attractive condition, which
will include chemical application, repairing, cabling, fertilizing,
watering, pruning and removal of any dead, diseased or declining
trees or plants.
Essential Duties:
Specialize in tree care, the planting and transplanting of trees
and plants including site preparation, installation, backfilling,
staking, pruning, watering, and mulching.
Raise and thin tree canopies; trim to relieve encroachment on
structures, walkways or roads; remove fallen, dead or hazardous
trees.
Identify potentially hazardous trees and other tree-related
problems; develop and apply appropriate tree hazard management
strategies.
Ensure safety of workers and other persons at worksites. Set up
traffic control measures to provide a safe worksite and prevent
entry of non-essential personnel.
Maintain records of work performed on all campus trees and maintain
tree inventory records.
Train, work alongside, and coordinate Groundskeepers in the
maintenance of grounds, trees and shrubs as required.
Operate brush truck, chipper, aerial lifts, chain saws, stump
grinders hand tools and vehicles associated with grounds
maintenance and landscaping activities.
Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as
required.
Ability to communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to
perform the essential functions of the job.
DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday; 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Salary Rate
$21.43 per hour, commensurate experience and education. ASU offers

Desired Qualifications
Must have Two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience, OR,
Associate Degree in Horticulture or related field e.g. Golf Course
Management, Sports Turf Management, Landscape Construction; OR, Any
equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which
comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved; AND
possess and maintain One (1) Grounds certification or equivalent
e.g. Arizona Pest Application License, Certified Arborist from
International Society of Arboriculture, Certified Grounds
Technician from PGMS, Passed Desert Landscaper School from the
Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden. Employee may be required to
possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and
required endorsements throughout employment.
ISA Certified Tree Worker
Experience:
tree maintenance, pruning and deadwooding.
operating and performing maintenance on specialized equipment
including brush chipper, stump grinder, aerial lifts and chainsaws
in a safe and efficient manner.
training, working alongside, and coordinating others in proper
pruning practices and work site safety.
with customer service.
hands-on leadership of tree crews to raise, thin, deadwood and
remove trees.
Demonstrated knowledge of:
tree care concepts and ability to perform various activities
related to urban forestry/arboriculture on private and commercial
properties such as diagnostics, pruning, and removal, stump
grinding, cabling, fertilizing, and planting.
fertilizer and other soil amendments, and/or pesticide
application.
local tree species and standards.
Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills.
Working Environment:
Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external
elements indigenous to a desert environment, weather, potential
exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and
fertilizers. Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping
equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking
over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending,
reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50
pounds. Regular use of mowers, trimmers, edgers, shears, spreaders,
hoses, hand and power tools/machines. May regularly operate a motor
vehicle as assigned. This position receives regular review of daily
work tasks to ensure adherence with established standards for
quality, aesthetics, and quantity. Drive University vehicles and/or
carts.
May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and
equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific
process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal
Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing
protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).
Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma and two-years (2) experience appropriate to the
area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of
experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills
and abilities have been achieved.
